Ones to Watch January/February, 2017:
Rodes Rollins: I discovered Rodes Rollins via the Fader, on Twitter. Side note: She has THE best twitter handle, ‘@ladyrodes.’ I gotta admit the inadvertent play on words caught my attention (it’s an in joke- those who know me, get it). The song, “Wes Come Back” is charming. “Young and Thriving” is also sort of trip hop, sort of dreamy, a pleasant listen. Bonus points for the fact that she also sings ‘we both came undone.’ I find that when there is synchronicity at play, it’s never a wrong turn to pay attention to it.
Spector- Reminds me of the Editors, both musically to a point, but especially the vocals. I can hear a similar cadence and tone between Frederick Macpherson, of Spector, and Tom Smith, the lead singer from Editors. Spector’s most recent release, ‘Moth Boys’ (2015, but I’m just discovering it now) is both a bit melancholic and slightly pop-tinged.
Pixx, ‘A Way to Say Goodbye.’ Her EP, ‘Fall In,’ is delightful, and her latest single, ‘I Bow Down,’ is insightful, honest, and compelling. Looking forward to her debut album, ‘the Age of Anxiety’ (LOVE the title!)
Fifi Rong, South by Southwest. I’ve been a fan of hers for a while- she’s another artist whose visuals are as compelling as the music. Hoping to catch her at SXSW!
August Hotel- Full disclosure- my cousin, Eva Padilla, is their lead singer. But that kid’s got one HECK of a voice! I’m objective enough to say, if I didn’t like something, I wouldn’t promote it. The music, the lyrics, the voice- all on point; solid indie music. They show a lot of promise, indeed. Allow me a brag- she (Eva) once auditioned for American Idol. Remember Halo Circus? Alison Iraheta, their lead singer, was also an American Idol alum. Just saying. Watch out for these guys! Clearly we are a musical family!
Autohypnosis’ EP- ‘President and Chairman of the Void’ (another GREAT title) is an interesting nod to our current state of crisis, in the United States. It is the sort of music you might like to listen to as you’re slam-dancing (yes, I still use that phrase) in a Berlin nightclub, as the world crumbles around you. But you don’t care, because you’re having a whale of a time. It’s an enjoyable listen, and I’m looking forward to hearing more music from Autohypnosis.
New Goldfrapp album! Stay tuned. They are, as usual, very mysterious about their impending release, but I’m on it. Fret not, dear readers!
